Sunita
Sunita brought in her printed designs and they look awesome! I love the effects she's used on her photographs and they've come out really well. I especially liked the status of Jesus. Cant wait to see them mounted on the frames!

Josie
Josie's mock design company design 'Concept Est Grande' is coming along really nicely and I'm looking forward to seeing it when it's been laser cut out.She also showed us a design for business cards using coloured lines (RGB & CMYK) which i thought was a very clever idea.

Rachel
Rachel has her chicken design all ready to go and i think they are an absolute winner! Only problem is deciding on which way to go with them, i think once she picks a direction to go in with her chickens she'll smash it!

Warwick
Warwick's design is just about there only thing standing in the way is that damn grass! The rest of the design looks great its just finding a balance and making sure the grass relates to the rest of his design concept. Otherwise i really like where the design is at now in relation to where it started out - its been great watching the whole development of this design.

3. PRACTICAL – Design Realisation
30 mins – Develop 2D Exhibition Designs / 10 mins Blog 2 weeks to go!
I'm going a little bit insane thinking about my design. I really need to commit already - its stressing me out! I'm very happy with my tree but I'm afraid it wont be enough. In class Sunita and i were talking about the idea of hanging apple's off my tree with pictures in them to go with the idea of creating a 'family tree'. I'm just at a loss as to how to go about it and i really don't want to distract from my tree design. I've done up another prototype this week and I've worked out how I'm going to mount it on the wall which is a plus and I've also bought my lighting at Bunnings to create the shadows which is also a plus. So I'm ticking things off the list but the big question is how to go about the apples.

Prototype with LED light creating shadows
LED light stick i'll be using
This shows the stand idea I am planning on using. It will provide a gap between the wall and the tree and will also keep it standing in place.

My design has been sent to Darwin Laser Cutters so now its just a waiting game and hopefully it comes out looking as good as I hope. Below is a video on how laser cutting works. Its really cool to see it in action.

Week 11 - 3D

2. GROUP EXERCISE – Concept Evaluation
Giving feedback on the effectiveness of your design process and concept communication PART 1 – 20 mins
Students present 3D exhibition designs and explain progress in the last week The GROUP gives verbal feedback on:

1.Effectiveness of design process
2.Effectiveness of concept communication
3.Progress in the last week

 Billie
Progress on my 3D is much the same as my 2D design. I’ve been cleaning up my design and with the help of Mark in today lesson I made a lot of progress on getting it right before I send it to the laser cutters to be cut out of wood for my 3D design. I also need to find out what the best format to send my design to them is and Josie also filled me in that they do accept Illustrator files which helps a lot.

Warwick
I have researched the different types of artificial grass to use as a base for my Irrigation Coffee table. Josie informed me that Bunnings had fake grass sold by the metre so I went on their website and looked at the different types available. Its roughly $30/m for the base grade stuff so I might need a couple of metres. I need to go in and check it out.

Josie
"My progress is somewhat slowing to a halt.
Lettering: My Materials are there but I wont get the MDF for the lettering until sometime this week and from there it will go to the laser cutters.Circles: Unfortunately I cant use Perspex so I’m going to use acetate and cut the circles out with a compass Blade."

Sunita
"My progress for the past week included experimenting and finding different materials that could work for the style of rood I want on my traditional house. Also thinking about how I want to place my half house on the wall."

3. PRACTICAL – Design Realisation
20 mins – Develop 3D Exhibition Designs / 5 mins Blog
The progress of my 3D design is a bit on hold at the moment until I've finished cleaning up my design before I send it to the laser cutters to do their thing. I emailed them the other day to get their opinion on what materials I should use as I'm starting to question whether i use ply wood like i originally planned or not. But they have actually closed up shop till the 17th so i wont hear back from the laser cutters till then. I'm starting to think that sheet metal would look pretty cool.

I really like the rustic look of the cut metal on this design
I absolutely love how this creates such beautiful shadows
This week i've been thinking more and more that i think I'd really like to do my piece in metal. It would still be light enough to mount on the wall but it would give a totally difference look. I'd really like to get the Laser cutters opinion first before i make any decisions but I can really see the finished design in metal.

2. GROUP EXERCISE – Concept Feedback
Giving feedback on the effectiveness of your design process and concept communication PART 1 – 20 mins
Students present 2D exhibition designs and explain progress in the last week The GROUP gives verbal feedback on:

1. Effectiveness of design process
2. Effectiveness of concept communication

PART 2 - 10 mins Blog Each student post feedback on all other students in your blog

Billie

Progress on my 2D design hasn’t been that great this week. I’m still at the stage of cleaning up design for print. I want to create very smooth lines before I do anymore stencils of my design and screen print it as its starting to get a bit costly buying more printing paper each week. So after this week I should be right to start doing up some final prints.
 Reference: Billie Mackie Week 11 – 2D

Josie
"My progress hasn’t moved so much as my design is final therefore all I have been doing is scrounging up materials for my 3D components and refining my logo lettering. I cant complete my logo as I want the materials I use for the 3D aspect to look the same as my 2D logo. Once I complete the 3D component then I shall finish the logo."
Reference: Josie Trayte Week 11 2D

Sunita
"In the past week I have made touch ups and modifications to my images. They have been put into appropriate format and have been handed over to Damien to print on the beast printer with semi gloss paper. Also I have researched framing companies that I can call to get quotes on having the prints applied to MDF and framed."
Reference: Sunita Murphy Week 11 2D

Warwick
I lost my Ai file for my MB Logo for 2D Design but I re-created it and added a couple of different types of grass. One using typical grass modified from google images and the second one was with Josie helping me to create a custom grass brush tool in Photoshop before dropping it into my new Ai file logo. It still looks a bit busy so I may have to simplify it to a few blades of grass so it can print.

PRACTICAL – Design Realisation
My design is coming along really nicely now and after spending what seemed like forever cleaning up my design ready for print i think its close to being finished. To create those soft curves I was after I spent alot of time in Illustrator eliminating unnecessary points so that it left lovely rounded shapes that were the branches of my tree.
About halfway through the 'clean up'

Scribe writes a summary paragraph on the 2 points below fro each member

1. Effectiveness of design process
2. Effectiveness of concept communication

Each student post the group results in your blog with images and descriptive text

We also presented our 3D design to the class and were evaluated on how effective our design process has been so far and how effectively our concept was communicated.

aspro design case study part 4 - Creative thinking

Above is a case study for a design group working on creative thinking. I thought this was quite appropriate seeing as though our group has been doing this same thing. I've really enjoyed brainstorming with our class and i find that everyone has different ideas and solutions and 5 minds are definitely better than one.
